2016 Private Health Insurance Premium Round Announcement

On 2 March 2016, the Minister for Health, the Hon Sussan Ley MP, announced private health insurance premiums would increase on average by 5.59 per cent from 1 April 2016.

Private Health Insurance Rebate – Rebate Adjustment Factor Effective 1 April 2016

The Australian Government Rebate on private health insurance is annually indexed on 1 April by a Rebate Adjustment Factor (RAF) representing the difference between the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the industry weighted average increase in premiums. The RAF is set out in the Private Health Insurance (Incentives) Rules 2012 (No.2).

The Rebate Adjustment Factor for 2016 is 0.963 and the industry weighted average premium increase for 2016 (including rate protection) is 5.59 per cent. The updated private health insurance rebate tiers from the Department's website

Enquiries by insurers on claiming of the Rebate should be referred to the Department of Human Services on 1300 554 463.

Enquiries by insurers on the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) should be referred to the Australian Tax Office (ATO) helpline on 13 28 61.
