An abnormal Pap smear result: What this means for you

8. Questions to ask your doctor, nurse or health worker

If you have had an abnormal Pap smear result, you may find the following questions helpful.

  • What exactly does my result mean?
  • Do I need more tests?
  • Why do I need a colposcopy?
  • What does my biopsy show?
  • What treatment choices do I have?
  • What treatment, if any, do you advise and why?
  • What is likely to happen if I don’t have treatment?
  • Will I need to rest after treatment, and if so, for how long?
  • Will I need time off work and if so, for how long?
  • Will there be bleeding or a discharge and if so, when will it stop?
  • Will this affect my sex life?
  • How else can I care for myself?
  • How often will I need further Pap smears or other check ups?
  • Can you give me more information about HPV?
